About The Wireless Network

DePaul Information Services (IS) has designed, installed, and maintains all Wireless LAN (802.11) standards and equipment on campus. We continue to test and monitor the network to determine how the wireless network can be improved and expanded.

It is against University Network Policy for any individual, group, or department within the University to install, attach, deploy, or connect to the network any Wireless LAN internetworking hardware and/or software without the express written permission of Information Services. For more information in obtaining wireless for your area, please call the Technology Contact Center at (312) 362-8765 or x28765 from any campus phone.

Our Wireless Technology

DePaul currently has implemented over 330 Cisco 1200 Wireless Access Points implementing 802.11 b and g standards across all campuses in order to provide the wide coverage offered. Across these access points, two publicly accessible wireless networks are available:
  • DePaulBlue - Implemented in 2006 - uses no wireless based authentication but relies upon software for its encryption and authentication. An SSL VPN from Aventail is in place to provide easy setup with minimal configuration to the PC

  • DPUWireless - Implemented in 2000 - Provides support for legacy devices and uses WEP for encryption and an in-house application for authentication - NetAuth.
Our wireless network is monitored 24/7/365 in order to provide the greatest level of uptime and reliability. Using Nagios to track the uptime of all our access points and MRTG to track bandwidth utilization and number of users logged in, we can isolate issues as soon as they occur.
